Diary Entry, The Week of June 8, 1980

Dear Diary,

What a warm day. I woke up a little early this morning to take Mom to the airport. I love the speed you can go on the new extension on LBJ (Interstate 635). No traffic at 6am. I’m figuring it will build up a little once they start to develop the land out there. It’s like driving in the middle of nowhere. Anyway, she went to Vineland (New Jersey) to see Papa, who has not been feeling very well.

Since graduation, I’ve been pretty consistent in my sleeping habits. It’s not easy going to bed around 2 in the morning and getting up at 5.

I went to get Dad his birthday present after the airport, but I didn’t have enough money. What I wanted to get him was a cordless phone. I saw one at Woolworth and thought it was really cool. Unfortunately, it was also $149. The guy said that it will probably be cheaper in the fall. It happens whenever a new product comes out. I remember getting my first calculator 5 years ago for $80. Now, it’s only $30.

The other thing I saw, that I really want, is that new headphone, portable stereo. I think it’s called a “Walkman”. That would be great. But, like everything else, I can’t afford $99 for a new one. That’s a lot of money. Dad asked me to fill up the gas tank and I couldn’t believe that it cost me like 85 cents a gallon! Geez. I wanted to take (name witheld) to the movies, but I think I may either beg Dad for the money, or take her next week. She wants to see either “9 to 5” or “Ordinary People.” They both sound dumb. I was hoping to go see “Caddyshack”. I saw a preview the other night for a new movie that looked amazing. It’s called “Airplane” and the preview was hysterical. It’s probably a really stupid movie, but the clips were funny.

I can’t wait till Friday night. The last episode of “Dallas” is being rerun. It was on a few weeks ago and I missed it. I started watching it when it first came on (being that it takes place here) and now that I’m hooked, it’s become the #1 show in America. I’ve heard about the plot of this episode already. Apparently, J.R. gets shot. He can’t die – the show wouldn’t be as good without him.

Also, I just read in Time magazine that they are filming a new movie with the guy from Welcome Back, Kotter and Saturday Night Fever, in Houston. Some kind of rodeo cowboy flick. What I like about it is that the soundtrack is supposed to be really good. At least it isn't disco.

No one is even talking about the Olympics coming up. Usually, all you here around this time are about the games. But no, not now. Carter apparently is mad at the Soviets for invading Afghanistan (like anybody cares about Afghanistan). He’s such a weak president. The fiasco with the “rescue” of the hostages was comical. It was so typical Jimmy. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Mt. St. Helens’ eruption was his fault. He certainly would apologize for it anyway. Gee, the mountain exploded, maybe we should get on our knees and beg the Ayatollah’s for forgiveness.

One of the stars of the Olympic hockey team was in Dallas yesterday. I heard the interview on the radio. Y’know, I wish they had a radio or TV station just for sports. It’s annoying to have to switch to KRLD to hear sports news once an hour (for like 60 seconds). At least I can listen to the Ranger games, although they really tanked this year. They just drafted a couple of pitchers, Mike Mason and Tom Henke. I’m figuring if they’re any good, they’ll be playing for someone else soon.

So, Miami is still inundated with Cuban refugees. I don’t understand why Carter allows them to come in. All we are doing is letting Castro empty his prisons and Carter (for “compassionate” reasons) is letting them in. I’m telling you, this guy is so weak that if he gets re-elected, we’re all in trouble. I kinda like Ronald Reagan over George Bush. Reagan seems very earnest and I think he’ll stand up to the Soviets. The only problem is getting elected. Carter’s going to be nominated over Kennedy (thank heaven – I can’t stand that jerk – and if I hear the name “Chappaquiddick” one more type, I’m going to be sick) and it’s hard to beat an incumbent. And Carter did bring Begin and Sadat together, but still, I think it had more to do with Begin and Sadat, then with Carter.

My friend, (name witheld), in Atlanta told me he got cable television. That’s pretty neat. He says he can watch movies commercial free. I don’t know, I think most people would prefer to watch them on a big screen. But I like the idea of being able to watch the weather whenever I want.

Oh, I love that new song by someone named Christopher Cross. It’s called "Ride Like the Wind” and “Misunderstanding” by Genesis. I’ve never heard of either of them before, but I think they’ll both be around a while.

One last thing, I have never seen this country so disheartened. After Vietnam, Watergate and now the hostage crisis (236 days and counting), we seem to just come to expect the worst. It’s very frustrating. Why are we so afraid to show some backbone? I worry about Reagan because the press seems to think he’s a warmonger. I worry about Carter, because we know who he is. (name witheld) says he’s going to vote for John Anderson. I like his bumper sticker. Carter has one that says, “A Vote for Carter is a Vote for the People”, Reagan has one that says, “A Vote for Reagan is a Vote for America”. Anderson’s says, “A Vote for Anderson is a Vote for Anderson.” Funny, yes. Vote for him? Uh, no.

I just think we need a new approach. Get us out of our doldrums.

So, on that note, as Brooke Shields says, “nothing comes between me and my…um, driving” (yeah, that’s it), I’m going to say goodnight.
