I just posted my latest article, "Kerry: More “Buchanan” than “Kennedy", on my website. It is without question, my most ambitious commentary to date.

Here's a sample:
John Kerry is from Massachusetts. So was John Kennedy.

John Kerry is a Democrat. So was John Kennedy.

John Kerry is Catholic. So was John Kennedy.

Both men came from privileged background. In fact, John Kerry credits
Kennedy with influencing his decision to enlist and to enter politics.

But, aside from sharing each other’s initials, John Kerry (to paraphrase
Lloyd Bentsen) is no John Kennedy. However, Kerry does indeed appear to
resemble, at least politically, another former president:

James Buchanan.

I have been reading “Presidential Leadership: Ranking the Best and the Worst in the White House.” It is a Wall Street Journal book, edited by James Taranto and Leonard Little. The book is a series of essays by a wide variety of authors and historians, from all sides of the political spectrum. The essay by Christopher Buckley, editor of Forbes FYI, motivated me to write this piece. However, it should be noted that before I began writing it, I spent a good deal of time researching the 15th President, as well as his predecessor, Franklin Pierce.

Although a bloodier period, the 1860's were a time of deep division and polarization, not unlike today. The similarities of James Buchanan and John Kerry are striking. It is my contention that the path that Buchanan led, and the one John Kerry proposes, is short-sighted and calamitous.
